Accessible Test days at The Oval

Last checked 2026-10-09

Build your Oval Test around the right seating position and gate. Vauxhall is the useful starting point for step-free travel; Surrey’s access team can connect that journey to companion seating, facilities and support.

Arrange the Test ticket and companion

Email accessibility@surreycricket.com or call Surrey’s ticket office on 020 3946 0100 with the Test and date. The 2026 access guide says the supporter buys the appropriate age-band ticket and a required companion attends free, with adjacent seating wherever possible. Ask what evidence is needed for your booking; the published guide does not specify a document list.

For the Oval Ashes weekend, describe the position you need: remaining in a wheelchair, transferring, avoiding steps or using an aisle. Include companion adjacency and the route to your chosen facilities. Surrey cannot provide continuous personal care; arrange your own support.

Surrey’s ticket office is by John Edrich Gate, with low shelves and hearing loops. A phone is not compulsory for admission: print-at-home tickets remain available through the Surrey Ticketing Account in a browser. Ask Member and Supporter Services about alternatives before travelling if neither app access nor printing works for your group.

Use Vauxhall for step-free planning

Vauxhall’s National Rail station has step-free access to every platform and is managed by South Western Railway. Arrange boarding assistance if needed: access to a platform is not the same as level boarding of every train. Plan the return assistance too, allowing time for a late Oval finish.

TfL’s guide shows Vauxhall as a step-free Tube option, with ramp provision; select street-to-train access in the journey planner and check lifts before travel. Oval station has no lift access. Kennington allows certain same-direction step-free interchanges, but its lifts do not create a wholly step-free exit to the street.

The usual Vauxhall approach leads towards Alec Stewart Gate. Save the ground-side route as well as the rail journey and allow your own comfortable travelling time. Allow extra time for your own pace and the Test crowd approaching the entrance.

Priority gates, parking and drop-off

Surrey offers priority entry at Alec Stewart and John Edrich gates, adding Sciver-Brunt for major fixtures including Tests. Its access information directs Vauxhall arrivals towards Alec Stewart and Oval station arrivals towards John Edrich; other entrances remain usable. Agree the most useful gate for your seat with Surrey.

Major-match Blue Badge parking is off-site, limited and requested from four weeks before the fixture through the access team. Keep the allocation letter if a place is confirmed. The designated set-down and collection area is Kennington Oval between Vauxhall Street and Clayton Street, with traffic staff managing closures.

For an Oval collection, give the driver the agreed road and return instructions, not just “Vauxhall”. If play runs late or you leave during a rain break, establish how to contact them and where to wait. Surrey’s JM Finn or Pavilion receptions can help request an accessible taxi when that suits your onward plan.

Choose viewing and facilities together

The access guide lists pitch-side wheelchair positions in blocks 1, 2, 12, 13, 20 and 21. JM Finn Block H has four balcony bays served by a lift and corridor; the shaded Laker Balcony viewing area is for members. Compare those locations with your toilet needs and Test ticket eligibility before accepting a different stand.

The Oval has Changing Places facilities on the first floor by JM Finn reception and on the SSE Energy Solutions concourse beside the Club Shop. RADAR access applies; stewards, Wayfinders or Pavilion Reception can help with keys. Ask which facility is practical from your allotted position, particularly if regular care breaks shape the whole visit.

On an Oval Test morning, make your first circuit a useful one: locate the agreed facility, a help point and the route back to your block before the opening spell. The SSE and JM Finn sides have different afternoon light. Tell Surrey if direct sun, rain or a long concourse journey would make the offered seat unsuitable.

Sensory and communication support

The children’s sensory area is in Bedser Suite 9. Surrey asks visitors to book using the match-day guide’s form; Pavilion Reception handles requests without a booking. Capacity is limited and the space is unsupervised. Ask whether it suits your party instead of treating it as a guaranteed adult quiet room or staffed childcare.

The optional non-visible-disability wristband can be requested by email or collected from Pavilion Reception, without explaining a disability to each staff member. Surrey also offers a route preview with audio and bookable non-matchday familiarisation visits. These can make the journey between an unfamiliar Oval gate, stand and facility easier to recognise.

For hearing support, discuss your exact Oval seat with the access team. Buy Test-match commentary radios in the Club Shop; free radios are available at domestic fixtures. Assistance dogs are welcome with advance notification through the main access contact.

Manage the sessions and the exit

At The Oval, tell the access team about medical bags or allergy-sensitive items before arrival. Use your usual personal equipment: emergency wheelchairs provide short-term help. Purple-bibbed Wayfinders assist at major matches, and the nearest steward can direct you to first aid.

Build food, water and rest around the Oval sessions in a way that suits your needs. The ground permits your own food, has water fountains and takes cashless payments. Keep essential items reachable at your position, leaving the gangway clear. Your booked sensory visit or care routine may be more useful than trying to match every interval in the cricket.

Before settling into a lift-served Oval position, ask about assistance if an exit route becomes unavailable and about the match-specific emergency arrangement. The access guide mentions evacuation chairs and individual planning, but its event wording needs confirmation for your Test seat. Do not assume the route used on entry is automatically the emergency route out.
