Australia play New Zealand at Adelaide Oval from Thursday 17 to Monday 21 December 2026. First ball is scheduled for 11:00 local time. This is the second match of their four-Test series, after Perth and before Melbourne’s Boxing Day fixture. It fits naturally into a trip that moves east through Australia before Christmas.

This season’s Adelaide match is a daytime Test. The ground helped establish pink-ball cricket when Australia and New Zealand played the first day-night Test here in November 2015. That history remains part of Adelaide’s appeal, but the December 2026 schedule gives you daytime sessions and an evening free to explore the city after stumps.

The northern end supplies the familiar Adelaide picture: the grassy Hill, heritage scoreboard and Moreton Bay figs. The scoreboard was first used in November 1911. Arrive with time to see it across the outfield, then compare the old northern outline with the much larger stands surrounding the other sides of the ground.

Adelaide works particularly well as more than a quick airport-to-ground stop. A city base lets you repeat the river crossing each morning, find a regular breakfast place and leave the evenings for South Australian food. If you are travelling on to Melbourne, keep a day between the two cricket stops for the flight and hotel change.

Thursday brings the opening toss and the chance to follow the match from its first over. Friday is useful if you want two consecutive early days without committing the whole Adelaide stay to cricket. Booking successive days also means you return knowing the scoreboard, the players’ positions and the route back to your seat.

Saturday and Sunday put the middle of the Test into a weekend. They suit a group mixing cricket with city sightseeing, but decide in advance who wants which days so you can book seats together. Consider your tolerance for several afternoons in the sun as well as your enthusiasm for watching every session.

Monday is the scheduled fifth day. Cricket Australia says Day 5 tickets are released after Day 4 concludes. Keep that day flexible: you could see a finish, or use the time for the coast, a tour or another Adelaide meal if the Test is already over. Avoid making a fifth-day ticket the only cricket in a long-distance holiday.

Start with Cricket Australia’s Adelaide match listing and follow its public-ticket link to Ticketek. Select the day, then compare the available bay, level and row. Keep the whole party in one booking if you want adjoining seats, and read the full total before paying. The same stand can contain quite different viewing positions.

The SACA Members’ Area uses separate member and guest entitlements. For men’s internationals in 2026–27, its seating includes the western stands and parts of the Riverbank Stand. A public ticket does not open those member areas. If a member is hosting you, agree the guest pass, entrance and seating arrangement before building your day around that invitation.

Save the Adelaide tickets and account details before leaving home. A working login and a charged phone make the gate simpler, particularly when a group has split between hotels. Keep the seat numbers somewhere easy to find as well: it helps everyone return to the right bay after buying refreshments or exploring the concourse.

Stands

The Riverbank Stand rises above the southern approach from the footbridge. From this end you look along the ground towards the Hill and scoreboard. Compare the level as well as the bay: higher seating gives a broader view of field placements, while lower rows put you closer to boundary action. Check whether the particular section is public or a member allocation.

The Western Stand includes SACA’s member seating. Its position gives a view across the oval towards the Eastern Stand, with the afternoon sun moving behind the western side. Admission arrangements matter here as much as the view. Anyone choosing a public ticket should use the seats actually offered in the Test’s Ticketek map.

The Eastern Stand offers the opposite side-on perspective. Its exposed seats face the later western sun, so roof coverage deserves attention before you buy. A stand roof is only the beginning of the shade question: a front row can sit beyond its shadow even when a seat farther back in the same tier is sheltered.

The Hill keeps a grassy northern edge beneath the old scoreboard and trees. It is a different way to experience Adelaide from a reserved grandstand seat. Check the admission category and arrangements for your day, particularly with children or anyone who needs a fixed seat. Tree shade moves, and the open mound needs a sun-conscious plan.

On the day

Session times

  • Before play — Find your row, water and facilities
  • 11:00 ACDT — Scheduled first ball
  • Intervals — Follow announcements for lunch and tea
  • After stumps — Return across the river or towards North Adelaide

For the December daytime Test, keep water, a hat and sunscreen close to your seat. Add a light layer for the walk back across the river after play. A small, manageable bag makes it easier to move between your row and the concourse; keep the ticket and any medication in a place you can reach without unpacking everything.

Read the Adelaide Oval and Cricket Australia entry conditions before deciding what food, bottles or equipment to take. If medical or dietary requirements affect your packing, contact the venue ahead of the visit and carry its reply. That conversation is easier before travelling than at a busy gate with the first session approaching.

On arrival, locate refreshments and the nearest facilities before settling in. Agree a meeting point within your stand if the party separates during lunch. The broad Adelaide concourses and several levels can make a vague instruction to meet outside difficult to follow, so choose a named bay or a clearly marked landmark.

Getting there

The Riverbank footbridge makes the city approach part of the Adelaide cricket day. Walk north across the Torrens towards the southern plaza, then continue to the gate shown on your ticket. Leave enough time for that last section: arriving at the footbridge is not the same as reaching a bay on the far side of the oval.

Adelaide Railway Station is on the city side of the river. Cricket Australia places it about 600 metres from the ground via the bridge. It is the useful rail destination for the Test, followed by the outdoor walk. A hotel near North Terrace can also make this straightforward, with breakfast in the city before joining the crowd heading over the water.

Festival Plaza tram stop is another nearby option. Use Adelaide Metro’s journey planner with the actual hotel address and Adelaide Oval as the destination. Cricket Australia includes public transport with Adelaide match tickets; keep the event travel instructions with your ticket so you know the services and conditions applying to the day you attend.

A North Adelaide stay can give you a different approach, towards the northern entrances from Pennington Terrace. Match your route to the entrance and seat, not simply the nearest edge of the stadium. If arranging a taxi or accessible set-down, confirm the event-day location and the return pickup before leaving the hotel.

  • Festival Plaza — Nearby tram stop on King William Road

Getting there from the UK

London to Adelaide requires a connection. Emirates publishes Heathrow itineraries with total journeys of about 21 hours through its Dubai network, with longer choices depending on the connection. Compare the complete flight schedule and local arrival date before reserving the hotel. Give yourself an Adelaide recovery day before the opening morning if the itinerary allows it.

Eligible British Citizen passport holders can apply for an Electronic Travel Authority, subclass 601, using the official Australian ETA app. Read Home Affairs’ eligibility and document requirements before applying. Entry information checked 12 October 2026. If your passport has another British nationality category, check the appropriate entry route for that document.

Adelaide uses Australian Central Daylight Time in December, UTC+10:30, and is ten and a half hours ahead of the UK for this Test. Keep Adelaide’s half-hour offset in mind when discussing calls home or connecting with friends in Sydney or Melbourne.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s West Terrace all-years figures give December a mean maximum of 26.9°C. Pack for summer and follow the daily heat and weather information before leaving for the oval. Arrange travel insurance for the journey, including existing medical conditions and any activities planned on your days away from the cricket.

Where to stay

A CBD hotel makes sense if you want the footbridge approach and Adelaide’s restaurants in the same daily routine. Look closely at the address within the centre: a room near North Terrace and the river has a different walk from one farther south. Compare the return journey after a hot day as carefully as the map distance to the oval.

North Adelaide places you on the stadium’s side of the Torrens, with a neighbourhood stay around its streets and dining areas. Work out the route to the northern gate before booking. Some addresses suit an easy walk; others need a bus or taxi, particularly if your party wants to save its energy for a full Test day.

For several nights, give practical room details some weight. A comfortable place to cool down, breakfast that fits an 11:00 start and flexible arrival arrangements can improve the stay more than a view you seldom see. Check the first hotel night against the Australian arrival date on the flight booking, then leave space for any onward journey to Melbourne.

Evenings out

Rundle Street in the East End is a good place to give the evening its own identity after hours watching cricket. Choose a restaurant that suits the whole group and allow time to return from the oval. With a daytime Test, dinner becomes part of the trip without needing to fit it around a night session.

Peel Street and neighbouring Leigh Street offer another city dining area, closer to the western part of the centre. They work well if your hotel is that side of Adelaide. Leave room between stumps and a reservation, then use the meal to agree the next morning’s meeting place and who is carrying any shared tickets.

Non-match day

A spare day opens up the Barossa, northeast of Adelaide, for cellar doors, food and a landscape beyond the city. Choose a manageable itinerary with transport arranged, especially if wine tasting is part of the plan. One region with time for lunch makes a more relaxed break between Test days than trying to collect several distant stops.

McLaren Vale lies south of Adelaide on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Its vineyards and food make a different excursion, with the coast nearby if the group wants more than cellar doors. Pick the day around your cricket tickets and the weather, and decide who is driving or book a tour before settling on tastings.

RoofClimb offers a much closer outing at the oval itself, following the stadium roofline with views towards the city, river and hills. Read its participation requirements before booking and choose a slot outside your cricket plans. The stadium’s guided tour is another way to explore; discuss access needs in advance because the heritage scoreboard is excluded from its wheelchair-accessible route.

Hospitality

Compare Cricket Australia’s Adelaide premium options with public seating and your own restaurant plans. Look at the match day, viewing position, indoor space and food included in the actual product. A package can suit a special occasion, but the seat and the place where you spend the intervals both deserve a close look.

If someone in your party needs an accessible route or dependable shelter, ask about those details before purchasing the Adelaide experience. Keep the reply with the booking. Premium products have their own interrupted-play and cancellation terms, so read those alongside the inclusions when deciding how much of the trip’s budget to commit.
